Image Research

Commissions |

The Internet is full of images, but when it comes to clarifying and settling the copyrights for a project, there is often a rude awakening. Depending on the respective temporal and territorial media use, use rights easily can amount to several hundred euros for a single image. Beyond the high-priced stock photo offerings, however, there is an enormous reservoir of images from other sources such as the holdings of national libraries or special archives, which often provide access to a great selection of spectacular, royalty-free images from all eras. These resources are not, however, easily accessed because their services are not commercially advertised. Furthermore, there are often language barriers and bureaucratic hurdles to overcome. I'm constantly dealing with many of these archives and therefore already have the respective institutional contacts. In addition, I am also in frequent contact with a large number of private collectors who often have unusual images absent from even extensive public collections. In some cases, however, it is even enough to fall back on the material that I have in my own extensive archives.
Here is a selection of exhibitions for which I did the image research and rights clearance – for some of them I was also involved as media planner or curator.
